Peatlands represent a large source of atmospheric methane, a greenhouse gas with the potential for a much greater impact on climate change than carbon dioxide.
Scientists concerned with climate change study the origins and effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere – gases that trap heat and cause a rise in global temperatures. Carbon dioxide generated by the burning of fuels is a well-known greenhouse gas. Another greenhouse gas is methane (CH4). In fact, methane has about 20 times more heat-trapping capability than equal amounts of carbon dioxide.
Efforts to minimize the heat trapping effects of greenhouse gases on climate include purifying, capturing, and storing (sequestering) carbon dioxide in geologic formations. These formations include oil and gas reservoirs, saline aquifers, and coal seams. It is critical that the stored carbon dioxide does not leak back into the atmosphere too rapidly, and carbon sequestration sites are equipped with sensors to detect carbon dioxide leaks.
While wetlands are responsible for a relatively large percentage of methane emissions, some scientists have suggested that lakes and other bodies of water may also contribute heavily. Small lakes have higher methane fluxes per unit area than large lakes. Recent estimates have significantly increased the number of small lakes worldwide. New research efforts can help to determine the scope of these emissions.
Regulations recently promulgated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) require qualifying power and cement plants to monitor and control hydrogen chloride (HCl) emissions. These regulations call for HCl concentrations to be below 1 ppm for power plants and 3 ppm for cement plants.
