Environmental regulations for the emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are expanding into new areas as regulators become concerned with the potential for transferring hazardous substances from the wastewater to the air. Recently issued rules for the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants and of Effluent Limitation Guidelines and Pretreatment Standards for the Pharmaceuticals Industry include many restrictions on the handling of streams that contain volatile organics. Similar rules for the synthetic organic chemicals and the petroleum refining industries have also been promulgated. These rules can require that companies control the emission of volatile substances from wastewater collection and treatment systems.

Stripping the wastewater with steam or air helps with emission compliance and reduces the organic loading on the treatment system and, in many cases, it results in a stripped wastewater that is suitable for reuse, perhaps as cooling tower makeup, or even as boiler feed water.
